I’m Carla Sharp, Professor of Psychology, and This is How I Work

carla

I am Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training at the University of Houston (UH). I’m a developmental psychopathologist with an interest in social cognition as a correlate, cause and treatment target for mental health problems in youth.

Location: Houston, Texas.
Current Gig: Clinical scientist; Mom.
One word/phrase that describes your work style: Flexible.
Current computer/mobile device: Desktop in my office at work; Laptop at home; iPhone when I’m traveling.

What apps/tools/software can you not live without? Microsoft Word.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or life hack? Do it now.

What’s your workspace set up like? I work only in my office at UH. When I write, I organize my ideas on my desk so that I can see them. It makes for a busy-looking desk but I tidy up between writing projects.

How do you keep track of things you need to do (any to-do-list apps)? I make to-do lists in my Filofax (yes! they are still available for purchase!) and I use my email Inbox.

Besides your phone or computer, what gadget can’t you live without, and why? Not a gadget person. I can’t live without my Filofax though. It contains my appointments, notes, plans, archive, stamps, check book, photos of my kids, bills, and whatever else I’m busy working on, personally and professionally.

What everyday thing can you do better than most people? What’s your secret? Can’t do anything better than most, but I have an amazing husband who partners with me in taking care of our two beautiful daughters, Fussa the cat and our household. My husband is my secret.

What do you listen to while you work? Music distracts me, so no music while I work.

What are you currently reading? I have been in a bookclub with an incredible group of Houstonian women for 11 years. We meet monthly. My favorite book this year has been All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr. It is a wonderful book about how important it is that we conserve the things and people that are dear to us.

How do you recharge? Crime novels, thrillers, wine, movies, swimming, facials, friends, book club, family, good food, art, and Robberg beach in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.

How do you balance your work life and your home/family life? I have an 8 year old and an 18 month old. I do what I need to do between 9.30am-4.30pm Monday to Friday. Sometimes I go back to work after 9.30 pm. The rest of the time belongs to my family.

What’s your sleep routine like? I’m an excellent sleeper and need 7 hours. I go to bed at 11.30 and I’m up at 6.30.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Don’t prioritize your schedule. Instead, schedule your priorities.
